What is NVIDIA OpenShell?
NVIDIA OpenShell is an open-source runtime for AI agents that helps define access boundaries for files, networks, tools and external services. It combines isolated execution, permission management and policy analysis.
Use cases
Teams can restrict agent permissions and review records of allowed and denied actions. OpenShell is primarily for developers and organizations connecting AI to working systems. It is an infrastructure tool rather than a standalone neural network, and requires environment setup and an understanding of access policies.
Limitations and infrastructure
OpenShell is part of Open Agent Safety Platform, but BlueField-4 is not required for every use case. The Sentry hardware mechanism is a separate, additional protection layer. Local deployment does not mean all integrated models and services process data only on the device.
The source code is open; model and infrastructure costs are separate. Deployment security depends on configuration, integrations and permission checks. Test access policies with non-production data before operational use.
